If you’re anything like the Hunter’s Pet Sitting team, you’re a total sucker for indoor vegetation. You know what we’re talking about — houseplants!
But…when you’ve got pets co-existing with you and your plants, you have to be more mindful of the plants that you’re purchasing.
Inevitably, even the most well-behaved cats and dogs may take a nibble out of your plants…and not all houseplants are the same. In fact, the wrong plant can have the same effects that chocolate has on your dog — causing seizures, tremors, and more.
Obviously, it can be difficult to monitor your cat and dog’s every move to ensure that they don’t ingest your plant babies. A much easier method? Buy non-toxic houseplants!
The ASPCA has an entire list of toxic and non-toxic plants, and we’re going to fill you in on our favorite non-toxic plants. Of course, it’s best to keep plants out of reach from your pets, but these guys are totally safe if consumed!
1. Spider Plant
These guys are a favorite! Not only are they easy to grow indoors, but they’re tough to kill (for all of you beginners out there!) and great air-purifiers!
2. Venus Flytrap
A carnivorous plant, the Venus Flytrap is a cute and funky addition to your house. Not to mention, it’ll eat those pesky flies that get inside. But, only flies are in danger here! If your pet takes a nibble of them, they are totally safe.
3. Boston Fern
The Boston Fern makes a lively addition to any home, but their luscious fronds may entice your pet into some curious chewing! Not to worry – the foliage is non-toxic, and guaranteed to brighten up any room.
4. Prayer Plants
Prayer Plants add a tropical flair to any low-light room. Their tropical leaves and stripes are breathtaking!
5. Peperomia
A classic! Peperomias come in so many different colors and textures, making them one of the most popular and sought-after houseplants. They’re also low maintenance and don’t mind if you miss an occasional watering!
6. Ponytail Palm
AKA, kitty dental floss! Cats tend to be SUPER attracted to Ponytail Palms, swatting at their leaves or literally starting to chew on them. They do best in bright light and like their soil on the dry side.
7. Wandering Jew
A true head turner, the Wandering Jew is an absolute marvel in any home. Place it in a basket or on a shelf, but no matter what, they’re safe! These purple-tinted beauties do best in bright, indirect light.
8. Air Plants
Air Plants, among other certain succulents, are a perfect low-maintenance and safe option. Either way, you shouldn’t have to worry about your pets getting into these babies if they’re up high enough!
9. Polka Dot Plant
The breathtaking pinks, whites, and reds splashed on the Polka Dot Plant is sure to spruce up any boring windowsill or corner of your house.
10. Orchid
Likely the most difficult plant on our list, orchids typically bloom in winter and can last up to four months with the necessary care. Nevertheless, they are striking to the eye and pose no threat to your pets.
11. Baby Tears
How cute are Baby Tears?! Your cat probably thinks so, too! The tendrils may lure your cat in, even if it’s hanging from your ceiling or tucked away on a high shelf. But, no sweat! It’s alllllll good.
12. Friendship Plant
Last but certainly not least — the Friendship Plant. This plant thrives in high humidity, can survive in low light, and also boast intricate leaf patterns and are soft to the touch. Still, they’re good to go!
